Among the pests threatening the profitability of solanaceous crop farms, the whitefly stands out due to its rapid reproduction rate and the severe impact it exerts on crops.

Understanding whitefly biology, detecting its symptoms early, and applying state-of-the-art biocontrol strategies are decisive factors in maintaining healthy, clean plants operating at full productive capacity.

Despite its small size of barely one to two millimeters, its yellowish body and waxy wings conceal one of the most complex pests to eradicate. In open-field crops, the whitefly appears during spring and summer, but it is in greenhouses where it reaches its greatest destructive potential, as microclimatic stability allows it to reproduce practically year-round.

One of the most dangerous elements of its biology is its high fecundity and the resulting overlap of generations. In other words, mobile adults, eggs, and feeding immobile nymphs coexist on the same plant, which enormously complicates crop management if appropriate measures are not taken.

Symptomatology and damage in tomato and eggplant

In solanaceous crops, whitefly infestation causes direct and indirect damage of major significance. As a direct form of damage, continuous sap feeding by adults and nymphs progressively weakens the plant, causing foliar chlorosis, growth stunting, and a generalized loss of vigor.

Indirect damage proves even more detrimental. The whitefly excretes abundant sugary honeydew that impregnates leaves and fruits. This dark coating reduces the plant’s photosynthetic capacity and depreciates the commercial value of the fruit. Compounding this is the most critical risk: acting as a highly efficient vector for disease transmission.

Pirecris: bridging pre-crop ‘knockdown’ and the integration of beneficial fauna

In Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the release of beneficial insects is a fundamental and necessary pillar. However, when pest population pressure is high, beneficial insects alone cannot suppress it, as the pest multiplies faster than the time required for beneficials to establish themselves.

In this context, a pre-cleanup or “knockdown” strategy becomes especially vital. Applying a prior treatment with a bioinsecticide featuring a powerful knockdown effect drastically reduces whitefly populations within hours. It is crucial for the product to feature a short Pre-Harvest Interval that allows the immediate introduction of beneficial fauna.

This initial knockdown “cleans” the plant and creates favorable conditions for beneficial fauna to work continuously following release without becoming overwhelmed.

Seipasa’s solution for knockdown biocontrol

To achieve rapid and safe pest reduction without inducing resistance or leaving chemical residues, Seipasa has developed the bioinsecticide Pirecris. Formulated under the principles of Natural Technology ©, Pirecris leverages the action of natural pyrethrins through a patented formulation that balances the PI and PII molecules, delivering maximum insecticidal efficacy with a lower dose of active ingredient.

Its micromolecular formulation offers optimal coverage and adherence on the leaf surface and the insect cuticle. Upon contact with the whitefly, Pirecris provides a powerful insecticidal effect thanks to its dual physical and neurotoxic mode of action. The product acts on eggs and larvae, significantly reducing the number of subsequent generations.

Pirecris is a certified product for organic farming, featuring zero residues and a Pre-Harvest Interval of just 24 hours. This characteristic enables a seamless transition from application to the release of beneficial fauna.

The strategy involves applying Pirecris to drastically lower the whitefly population burden and, 24 hours later, releasing beneficial organisms with total safety and compatibility. The recommendation is to apply Pirecris at the first symptoms of infestation. The product is suitable for both open-field production and protected greenhouse crops.

Its performance is reflected in Figure 1, corresponding to an efficacy trial conducted on greenhouse tomatoes, variety Matías, in Cádiz. Compared to another biological reference standard (Pyrethrin 4%), Pirecris demonstrates superior performance in containing pest progression while utilizing half the active ingredient.

Figure 1. Pest evolution across all life stages.

In this trial, 2 applications were made at a 7-day interval, and the trial evaluation accounted for all pest life stages—specifically, larvae and adults.

In conclusion, whitefly control in tomato and eggplant crops requires combining precise diagnosis with an integrated strategy. Constant monitoring, sound cultural practices, and the timely application of Pirecris to prepare the crop prior to introducing beneficial fauna constitute the most effective formula to protect yields, ensure plant health, and safeguard grower profitability.

[54,70,72
post-22019","blog","type-blog","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria-blog-biopesticides","categoria-blog-pests","categoria-blog-zero-residues
["GET
