Seipasa introduces Seithor bioherbicide in Portugal, marking a new era in weed control

Seipasa, a Spanish company specialized in the development, formulation, and manufacturing of bioinsecticide, biofungicide, biostimulant, and nutritional treatments for agriculture, has announced the official launch in Portugal of Seithor, a new herbicide of natural origin for weed control.

This strategic move follows the attainment of the new plant protection product registration (authorization No. 02495 by the DGAV), allowing the company to position this product as a real and effective alternative to synthetic chemical herbicides.

With Seithor, Seipasa not only strengthens its biocontrol portfolio —which already exceeds 70 plant protection product registrations in more than 30 countries— but also officially inaugurates a new line of bioherbicides within its catalog and commercial strategy.

Seithor is a post-emergence foliar contact herbicide designed for the effective control of weeds in their early stages of development. Its rapid action is accompanied by excellent coverage and optimal absorption, which ensure high efficacy with an optimized dose of active substance. Furthermore, as it is a contact solution, it does not present residual activity in the soil, meaning its use is geared toward targeted control strategies and integrated weed management programs.

Strengthening the biocontrol portfolio

For Pedro Mota and Pedro Sapata, Seipasa’s business development managers in Portugal, this launch represents a key milestone in Seipasa’s commitment to biocontrol and its promise to provide farmers with new effective, safe, and registered alternatives capable of replacing the progressive loss of synthetic chemical active ingredients.

“Seithor represents the opening of a new product category for Seipasa. It is our first bioherbicide, and its arrival in the Portuguese market reinforces our commitment to offering biological tools with plant protection product registration that respond to the current needs of the farmer,” they stated.

A long-term commitment in Europe

Ricardo Pinto, Seipasa’s head of development in Europe, also highlighted Seithor’s journey in Europe and the long road ahead for the product in this market. “Seithor is already registered in Greece and has now arrived in Portugal, consolidating itself as an alternative to the usage limitations presented by synthetic herbicides, both due to the emergence of resistance and the pressure of increasingly restrictive European legislation, where many chemical substances are candidates for substitution and will disappear in the medium term. Greece and Portugal are just the beginning, as Seithor will also be available in Seipasa’s most strategic European territories very soon.”

What truly sets Seithor apart is its high technological development, as the product is capable of achieving greater efficacy using a smaller amount of active ingredient compared to other market references.

The highest technological development

Thanks to its advanced encapsulation technology, the active ingredient travels protected by a surfactant shield, remaining intact and ready to act at the moment of spraying. All of this is supported by a high-quality formulation that guarantees impeccable emulsion and total homogeneity in every application. It is, in essence, optimized power for those seeking superior results with the lowest possible impact.

Its contact mode of action acts directly on plant tissues, denaturing the leaf’s waxy cuticle and altering cell membranes, causing cell rupture and a lightning-fast desiccation of the plant.

The efficacy of Seithor results in a rapid and powerful action, with visible symptoms within a short period after application.

Among the benefits and competitive advantages of Seithor, its broad spectrum of control over monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds stands out, as well as its sustainable profile. Being a biodegradable and residue-free product, it actively contributes to preserving soil fertility, biodiversity, and resistance to erosion.

Seithor is a high-quality solution with excellent miscibility and stability, which does not affect crop vigor and guarantees an effective tool for inclusion in sustainable and Zero Residue Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
